The The Rock Creek Stream Valley Corridor is a local favorite among Washington, DC and Suburban MD nature enthusiasts. This ride samples the northern section of the trail as it meanders through suburban Montgomery County to Lake Needwood, a man-made reservoir created to tame the mighty Rock Creek and provide flood control and protection for residents along the banks of the creek to the south. Lake Needwood is also the starting point of the Rock Creek trail to its terminus in Washington DC.
This portion of the Rock Creek Trail can also be combined with other nearby trails, including the Matthew Henson Trail to the east and the entire length of the Rock Creek trail to the south. Upper Rock Creek is documented in Best Easy Bike Rides Washington,DC, portions of this ride are also included in other rides in Best Rides Washington,DC.
Pausing during the ride to shoot some pictures of the turning foliage.
