Howison Homestead
Shortly after moving to Prince William County in 2001, I discovered a small local gem close to home: the Howison Homestead Soccer Complex. I’ve long been an avid soccer fan, and at the time I was still playing the beautiful game myself. I spent a lot of time at the fields kicking the ball around and eventually joined multiple teams, competing in local 7v7 tournaments over the years.
I also frequented the complex when the Woodbridge International Soccer League was active, using weekend matches as an opportunity to practice my photography. Photographing local players helped me sharpen my skills and prepare for the faster pace of shooting DC United matches at RFK Stadium for my UnitedMania project. Over the years, I’ve watched Howison evolve from a modest setup—just three natural grass fields with minimal amenities—into a modern soccer complex with turf fields, a clubhouse, and a growing list of improvements that have made it a much more welcoming place to spend time.
That transformation has continued. Over the past year, crews have been busy adding paved walkways, tiered viewing platforms, expanding the clubhouse, and installing artificial grass areas that give spectators more comfortable places to watch matches unfold.
As I began my recovery from ostomy surgery, Howison became a regular stop again—this time as part of my daily walks. Those visits gave me a reason to slow down, spend time outdoors, and take a few photographs documenting the fields in their current state. It also felt like the right opportunity to take my Kodak Retina IIIc film camera back out for a spin, capturing a handful of frames on film as part of an ongoing personal photography project.
Below are a few selected images from those walks.
