Pelicanos

My buddy Tino negotiating a section of tight singletrack on the way to La Quipa, an archeological point of interest along the ride.

Naplo, Lima Peru.

Every time I head down to Lima I try to squeeze in a ride. Usually I hit Pachacamac just south of the city, but this time around I connected with a local, Arturo Heckathorn, and visited a new destination further south in Naplo/Pucusana: Pelicanos.

As you can see by the profile there was a ton of climbing from the get go, but it was all gradual, with only a couple of steep sections. Most of the time we were either on gravel roads or along sections of narrow singletrack. Not for a future outing - bring a gravel bike! the network of Gravel roads along the coast is spectacular

We started out with a hike a bike and then made our way up to two overlooks before riding some insane berms. The berms were high and wide. The key to riding these was to embrace your momentum as you rolled up high on the berms. Any loss of speed would have made for a less than stellar ride.

We started at a little over 200’ aboce sea lvel and climberd a little over 1,100’ over the course of 8 miles to the ride’s high point. A windy peak with communication antennas and cell towers. From there the descent got steep and loose rather quickly. I’m not ashamed to say I walked 2/3 of it. We finished the ride with a bonified section of free riding that Brett Tippie would have been proud off; I also rode only half of that steep shit. There’s a little video floating around of me tumbling down the hill.

Overall great views, good times and great food after the ride.

Capped things off with a frigid dip in the pacific, a post ride Pilsen and fresh ceviche at “El Especialista” in Pucusana.
